Reporting Financial Concerns
EthicsPoint FAQs

What is EthicsPoint?
EthicsPoint is an independent, third-party vendor that provides an anonymous and confidential way for faculty and staff to report questionable or illegal practices.

Why has Rutgers contracted with EthicsPoint?
Since the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, publicly traded corporations have been required to provide a confidential and anonymous way for employees to alert leadership to potential irregularities. Although Sarbanes-Oxley does not apply to educational institutions, the audit committee of the Rutgers Board of Governors requested that this resource be made available to university employees. Rutgers chose EthicsPoint because of its specialized expertise in creating and managing anonymous reporting hotlines.

When should I contact EthicsPoint?
EthicsPoint should only be used for reporting questionable financial practices. Employees are encouraged, whenever possible, to bring concerns to the attention of their supervisor or of the appropriate university department. Information on submitting a report can be found at www.financialconcerns.com. When that is not possible, however, employees can access EthicsPoint on the Web at www.fc.ethicspoint.com or by phone in both English and Spanish at 800 445-7079. The TTY number for the hearing impaired is 866 294-9572. All reports through EthicsPoint are confidential and anonymous. New Jersey law prohibits retaliation against an employee who reports unlawful activity.

What if I have a non-financial concern?
Non-financial concerns such as sexual harassment or workplace safety should be reported to the appropriate university office. A list of offices can be found at www.financialconcerns.rutgers.edu/nonfinancial.shtml.

Is this system really anonymous?
EthicsPoint is dedicated to protecting anonymity and is contractually bound not to identify the reporter. The company uses the latest encryption technology and does not track or capture screen names or computer addresses.

What happens after I file a report?
Reports are forwarded to university officials who will review the circumstances, initiate any necessary investigations and take appropriate action. When you file a report, you will establish a password that will allow you to follow up on your report.

What if I remember something important after I file a report?
When you file a report, you will establish a password. This will allow you to return to the site to enter additional information, respond to questions that university officials may have as they review your report or follow up on a report.

Where can I get more information?
You can get more information about EthicsPoint on the Rutgers Web site www.financialconcerns.com or by visiting the EthicsPoint site at www.ethicspoint.com. You can also contact Joseph Sikora, director of internal audit, at jsikora@rci.rutgers.edu or 732 932-8089 ext. 3317.
